Black Limosin — Black Diamond — Slaughter Pen's Most Scenic Black Trail
If you're looking for a black diamond trail at Slaughter Pen that combines a technical challenge with some of the most dramatic scenery in the system, Black Limosin delivers something most riders don't expect from a trail this short. From narrow singletrack along the creek to the wooden bridge to the long rock garden that defines the mid-section to the section that follows the ridge that overlooks Angus Chute and the whole of Slaughter Pen below — this is a trail that earns its black diamond rating through accumulated character rather than a single dramatic feature.
And then there's the deer. But more on that in the video.
The Wooden Bridge
After splitting off from Angus Chute, Black Limosin opens with a short and narrow stretch of singletrack that takes you to the wooden bridge crossing that establishes the trail's tone. It's a clean, purposeful structure with a berm for those feeling so inclined that carries you across a creek bed. It's also, as our trail video revealed, a favorite hiding spot for the local wildlife — a deer caught on camera sprinting up the creek bed alongside the trail, disappearing beneath the bridge, and leaping into the brush above the trail moments later. One of the better unscripted moments in Slaughter Pen trail history.
The Rock Garden
The section following the bridge is a lengthy rock garden that demands solid line choices. You will see two short wooden bridges that are more part of the landscape then an actual bridge, some chunky and loose rocks that form a sort of staircase like structure that work its way a ridge. Clearing this section can be a technical challenge waiting to be answered.
The Ridge — Overlooking Angus Chute
After the rock garden staircase, the trail transitions into narrow singletrack that runs along the ridge before the final exit. This is where Black Limosin earns its scenic reputation. The trail hugs the contour of the hillside with Angus Chute visible below and the wider Slaughter Pen system spread out beneath you — a rare moment of exposure and perspective in a trail system that usually keeps you tight in the trees. The view is best in the fall and spring when all the leaves have fallen. The ridge section is short but memorable, and it gives riders a genuine sense of the terrain they're riding through rather than simply moving through it.
The Exit — Wooden Ramp onto Angus Chute
Black Limosin exits onto Angus Chute via a final wooden ramp — a purposeful, committed finish that brings riders directly onto one of Slaughter Pen's most recognized blue trails. It's a clean handoff that sets up natural continuation into the more of Slaughter Pen’s most iconic trails.
