Back 40 Trails
The Back 40 Trail System offers a true Ozark backcountry mountain biking experience just north of Bentonville in Bella Vista, Arkansas. Known for its flowing singletrack, scenic ridge lines, rock features, and creek crossings, the Back 40 delivers longer miles and a more remote feel than the in-town trail systems.
Designed as a connected loop system that is 21.4 miles long, the Back 40 allows riders to build big days in the saddle or choose shorter segments that highlight the best of Northwest Arkansas mountain biking. Expect sustained climbs, fast descents, and natural rock features that reward endurance and line choice. You will encounter a raging Pinion Creek Falls in the spring when the run off from Lake Anne is at its Peak, or a more inviting more subdued falls in the summer.
Whether you’re training for distance, exploring beyond Bentonville, or looking for a quieter ride through the woods, the Back 40 provides one of the most complete cross-country trail experiences in the region.

Back 40 Checklist
Water - There are few places to refill along the trail. Bring enough to keep hydrated especially in the summer months when it gets hot.
Electrolytes - Drinking enough water is only part of staying hydrated. Taking electrolytes is also critical to staying hydrated.
Snacks - Nutrition is key. Keep your energy up. Who doesn’t like a good snack trailside.
Small First Aid Kit - Accidents happen at the most inconvenient times. Be prepared when it happens. Big bandages are encouraged.
Safety Gear - Helmet, knee and elbow pads may save you from needing to use a First Aid Kit or call it a day early. Protect yourself.
Spare Inner Tube - Even tubeless can utilize a spare tube. The sharp Arkansas rocks love slicing tires up. It happens more than you think.
Trailforks, Alltrails or Google Maps - Ensure you are on the right path or if you need to change plans due to changing circumstances.
Hidden Gems Along the Back 40
One of the most memorable stretches of the Back 40 Trail System sits near the southern shores of Lake Anne, where the trail winds beneath towering Arkansas limestone cliffs. Massive rock ledges rise overhead, creating a narrow corridor that makes you feel small in the best way as you roll through.
It’s easy to miss this hidden section if you follow the unnamed bypass shown on some maps, but the short detour is absolutely worth it. The added distance is minimal, and the payoff is one of the most scenic and uniquely Ozark feeling segments on the Back 40. When you are riding near Lake Anne, take the scenic route beneath the cliffs as it’s a standout moment on the entire system.
Pinion Creek Falls
Pinion Creek Waterfall is one of the most scenic natural landmarks along the Back 40 Trail Loop. Tucked into a quiet stretch of the system, this cascading waterfall offers a peaceful contrast to the rolling singletrack and rocky ridgelines that define the Back 40.
Riders often pause here to reset, take photos, or simply enjoy a moment off the bike. After rainfall, the waterfall becomes even more dramatic, making it a rewarding stop for those exploring the full Bella Vista backcountry experience.
